Has anybody ever had your creative marketing ideas criticized?

I’m now in a marketing class and the professor was talking to us about how it can be a challenge to work in groups and get your ideas heard and that one day our ideas will criticized or people will not agree to use your idea.

I guess I’m just curious to see examples of this happening to anyone either during a job, or in a marketing class. How did you take the rejection? Did you give up on your idea?

THANKS :)

The review of marketing ideas is an intrical part of the success process in marketing. Without critics, the marketing process becomes stagnant. Marketing teams criticize one another’s ideas often, and that’s good as long as it is in the context of civil exchange.

As a consultant, I sometimes get my ideas rejected by clients. It is my job (not the client’s) to take that critic seriously but not personally: I’m here to serve the client.

Unfortunately, it is often hard to remain objective in the face of criticism. After all, those are OUR ideas, that are getting dismantled and criticized. It’s like watching your kid get pulled from the soccer team… it’s fair, but it really hurts.

I have witnessed criticism border on mean behavior, and that’s never good: I once saw the president of the company yell at a web design firm’s account executive for the dysmal job they did. She burst into tears. That was really harsh to see and extremely unprofessional on the part of the president.

Nevertheless, it is important to stay calm and collected, to maintain a professional attitude, and to hear what the other side is saying. If we take criticism for face value, we always have an opportunity to make our client (internal or external) happy and to improve our performance.

    Hello my friend,

I get my marketing ideas criticized at times. It hurts at first. You just have to look at the message and not the messenger.

I find that my ideas get better after this and now I don’t mind it so much anymore.

    I hope this helps.
